Marine Le Pen, born on August 5, 1968, is a French politician and lawyer. She is the daughter of Jean-Marie Le Pen, a former president of the far-right National Front.
Political Career
Marine Le Pen entered politics in 1998 and gradually rose through the ranks of the National Front. She became its president in 2011 and led the party to a series of electoral successes, including qualifying for the second round of the 2017 French presidential election.
Presidential Campaigns
Le Pen ran for the presidency in 2012 and 2017. In 2012, she placed third in the first round with 17.9% of the vote. In 2017, she again placed third in the first round but significantly increased her vote share to 21.3%, qualifying for the runoff against Emmanuel Macron. She lost the runoff to Macron with 33.9% of the vote.
Positions and Controversies
Le Pen is known for her anti-immigration and anti-EU stances. She has also been criticized for her alleged ties to extremist groups and her remarks on issues such as Holocaust denial.
