Massive Quake Hits Miyazaki Prefecture

A strong earthquake has struck off the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture in Japan, causing widespread damage and triggering tsunami warnings. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the quake occurred at 4:42 pm ET at a depth of about 18 miles.

Aerial footage from the area shows toppled buildings and wrecked boats, indicating the severity of the quake. Authorities are still assessing the extent of the damage and injuries.

The earthquake has raised concerns about the potential for a larger, "mega-earthquake" in the region. The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a warning of an increased chance of such an event in the coming years.
